THE BEATIFICATION OF DON ALVARO DEL PORTILLO
by: Raquel Guerrero
Born and raised in Madrid, Don Alvaro del Portillo was a faithful collaborator and the first successor of St. Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei.
He spent his life with service to others and lived a simple family life. His vocation in providing human and Christian formation along with his encounter with St. Josemaría Escrivá marked his path to holiness and love for Christ.
Don Alvaro had a presence and always sought out the glory of God. He served his fellow men through his simple way of living and dedicated his life through his fidelity to God and mankind.
By immersing himself with service to others and capturing work through the ordinariness of life, it led him closer to God.
“He lived as he would say and believed that example is the best preacher.”
~ Don Javier Echevarría, Prelate of Opus Dei ~
This beatification is an invitation that all of us are called to holiness, opening our souls to receive the grace of God and be a vehicle to spread goodness to the world.
Sept. 27, 2014 marked Don Alvaro’s 100th year of his birth in his homeland, Madrid. The miracle that was attributed to Don Alvaro was of an infant boy from Chile whose heart had stopped beating for 30 minutes.
With approximately two hundred thousand people gathered, his beatification in Valdebebas, Madrid proved to that now grown up boy, that he had another chance to live a life filled with love and service.
Thanks to Alvaro’s intercession, we all have a chance to be as holy as our Heavenly Father is holy.
